May Reflections
Those who know me know that my favorite book of the Bible is the gospel of John. This month we have John repeatedly and full of encouragement and promise. It begins with Jesus telling us, “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” And that there is a place for us there. He continues, “I will not leave you orphans” I will ask the father to send you “The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will teach you everything and remind you of all that [I] told you.” In between these promises and Jesus’ Ascension Jesus tells us that, although we are in the world, He has called us out of the world.
At the Ascension, Jesus gives the apostles and, by extension us, the great commission to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit…” In the gospel for Pentecost, Jesus reiterates: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
The month ends with the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. In the gospel from St. John we have the familiar quote often shown at sports events (John 3:16), “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.”
The upshot of all of this is that while we are in the world, we are not of the world. There is a place for us elsewhere. But while we are here we have a mission, to bring others to Jesus and to bring Jesus to others. Let the Holy Spirit touch you like He touched the apostles on the Pentecost (May 24).
